Your rankings held and your traffic fell. Here is what to do about it

If your Search Console impressions are flat, your average position is stable, and your clicks are down, nothing is broken. The results page changed underneath you.
AI Overviews now answer a substantial share of queries directly. Click-through analyses published through 2025 and 2026 consistently report steep organic CTR declines on the queries where those answers appear — and equally consistently find that brands cited inside the AI answer capture materially more clicks than those that are not. Visibility inside the answer is the new front page.
What still earns the click
- Bottom-of-funnel commercial queries — pricing, comparisons, 'X vs Y', 'best X for Y' — where the searcher needs to evaluate, not just be told a fact
- Local and 'near me' intent, where the click is the transaction
- Queries requiring a tool, calculator, login or download
- Branded search — which is why brand-building now has a direct SEO return
How to get cited rather than skipped
AI answers assemble from sources they can parse and trust. Practically, that means clear entity definitions, structured data, and content that answers a question completely in one place rather than spreading it across a 2,000-word preamble.
- Answer the question in the first 50 words of the section, then elaborate
- Use Organization, Service, FAQPage and Article schema — machine-readable claims travel further
- Build topical depth around an entity rather than one page per keyword variant
- Cite primary sources and publish original data; both raise the odds of being quoted
- Keep the page fast and server-rendered, so crawlers see the content without executing JavaScript
Measure differently
If clicks per impression is your only health metric, an improving brand will look like a declining one. Track share of AI-answer citations for your priority queries, branded search volume, and cost per qualified lead by channel. Then let paid search cover the commercial queries where organic clicks have genuinely evaporated — that is a budgeting decision, not a defeat.
And fix the site speed while you are here
Deloitte Digital's study for Google isolated mobile site speed and found a 0.1 second improvement lifted retail conversions by 8.4% and average order value by 9.2%. Fewer clicks arriving makes each one worth more — which makes a slow landing page an expensive thing to keep.
